Eco-Friendly Drilling Fluid: Calcium Chloride-Based Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent (NADES) as an All-Rounder Additive

Designing an effective drilling mud is a critical aspect of the process. A well-designed should not only provide efficient hydraulics but also fulfill three important functions: enhancing rheology, inhibiting hydrate formation in deepwater drilling, and suppressing shale swelling when through formations. Achieving these functions often requires use various additives, additives are expensive, non-biodegradable, have significant environmental impacts. To address concerns, researchers explored potential applications ionic liquids deep eutectic solvents design, which shown promising results. However, even more environmentally friendly alternative has emerged form natural (NADES). This research focuses on in-house-prepared NADES based calcium chloride glycerine, with ratio 1:4, prepared at 60 °C, utilizes it as additive following API 13 B-1 standards checks its candidacy rheology modifier, hydrates, inhibitor. The findings study demonstrate that NADES-based significantly improves overall yield point to plastic viscosity (YP/PV) mud, provides good gel strength, inhibits by up 80%. Additionally, impressive 62.8% inhibition while allowing for 84.1% improved recovery. Moreover, exhibits 28% 25% reduction filtrate cake thickness, respectively, further supported results XRD, zeta potential, surface tension. Based positive outcomes, chloride–glycerine recommended versatile suitable industrial applications. Furthermore, presents option compared traditional addressing concerns about cost, biodegradability, impact process ultimate global impact.
